4. The returned webpage will include your test certificate (an example
is shown as figure 3.5 on page 67). Cut and paste the test certificate
into a file named httpsd.crt in your /etc/httpd/conf direc-
tory.
See section 3.6 for instructions on how to install the testcertificate and test
your secure web server.
3.6 Installing and Testing Your Certificate
Atthis point, you shouldhavea file named httpsd.key, containing your
key, and a file named httpsd.crt, containing your test certificate. Both
of the httpsd.key and httpsd.crt files should be in your
/etc/httpd/conf/ directory. If they aresomewhere else, move them to
that directory. If you changed any of the default locations or filenames for
the secure web server in your Apache configuration files, you should put
these two files in the appropriate directory, based on your modifications.
Now start your server as described in section 2.7 on page 40. If your key
file is encrypted, you will be asked for the password. Type in your pass-
word. Your server will now be running.
Point your web browser to your server’s home page. You should see a
dialog box which indicates that your browser needs to be configured to
accept the test certificate.
Follow the instructions provided by your browserto acceptthe testcertifi-
cate. You can just accept thedefaults by clicking Next until the dialogs are
finished.
Once you’ve configured your browser to accept the text certificate, your
secure web server will show you a default home page as shown in fig-
ure 3.6on page 68.
Your web server is running. The next step is to buy and install a real cer-
tificate.
