2. Quick Configuration and Installation Instructions
This chapter provides instructions for configuring the SGI Linux operating system that
comes preconfigured on your SGI machine. It also describes how to configure a default
router, install the operating system from a CD, and upgrade from release 1.0 to release
1.1.
Beforeyouinstallorconfigureyoursystem,pleasereadChapter 1,“SoftwareOverview,”
so that you may have an idea about the features in release 1.1 and their ramifications.
TheRedHatLinux6.0InstallationGuideandtheRedHatLinux6.0GettingStartedGuideare
also shipped with your SGI machine. Refer to them for any questions you might have
after following the instructions that apply to you in this chapter.
Note: SGI Linux 1.1 ships from the factory with a multiprocessor kernel that supports
up to 960MB.If you havea single processor, orhave more than 960MB,you may wantto
boot using a different kernel. This process is described in “Changing Linux Kernels” on
page 17.
Configuring Linux
Your SGI machine comes with Linux preinstalled. This section contains instructions for
beginning to configure Linux so your machine will run on a network.
After pressing the power button to power on your machine, several screens of
information pass before the login prompt appears.
