Chapter 2: Quick Configuration and Installation Instructions
Note: Linux can use automated power management (APM) on single-CPU systems but
not on SMP systems. During the boot process, you may see the following warning
message:
Starting APM daemon: [FAILED]
The word FAILED is displayed in red. You can ignore the message.
See“ChangingLinux Kernels” on page 17 for information onbuildingasingleprocessor
kernel.
Use the following procedure to boot and configure your system:
1. After the login prompt appears, type root. Press Enter.
2. When prompted for a root password type sgisgi. Press Enter.
Caution: For security reasons Linuxrequiresa root passwordfor login. Ifyouleave
the password field blank, you cannot log in and are unable to use the machine.
3. When prompted for a new UNIX password, type your new root password. Press
Enter.
4. When prompted to retype the new UNIX password, do so. Press Enter.
You are now in the linuxconf program and are presented with its Welcome.help
screen.

TherestofthisproceduredescribeshowtoconfigureLinuxsoyourSGImachinewillrun
on a network.
You will need to know information that you can obtain from your system or network
administrator,such asthe host nameof yourmachine, its primaryname andits domain,
its aliases (optional information), and its IP address. You will also need to know if your
network uses Domain Name Service (DNS), and if it does, you will need the IP address
of your name server and your default domain name for DNS. After you have obtained
this information, you may choose to write it next to the corresponding steps in this
document for future reference.
5. When you are ready, press the Tab key and press Enter.
